Dominic is the warm one.

Brown marble, veined and banded the way stone is when it has iron in it, with gold handles that pick the warmth up rather than cut against it. It is the counterpart to our Tara Marble Tray — same two shapes, opposite temperature. Tara is cool and graphic; Dominic sits with brass, walnut, tan leather and caramel.

Which shape, and where it goes

The rectangle is 30 × 20cm. In practice that is a candle, two stacked books and a remote, or a decanter and two glasses — and it wants a straight-edged surface beneath it: an ottoman, a rectangular coffee table, the length of an entry console.

The round is 30cm across. It belongs on a round or oval table, a bar cart shelf, or a vanity, where a rectangle spends the whole time arguing with the edge it sits on. On a 90–100cm round coffee table it covers about a third of the diameter, which is the ratio that reads as a centre rather than a coaster.

Scale rule for either: on a 120 × 60cm coffee table, one tray, set off-centre, one tall object on it and everything else low. Two trays on the same table is one too many.

Brown marble is still marble

Every piece is cut from natural stone, so the veining, the depth of the brown and the weight differ tray to tray. Yours will not match the photograph exactly — that is the difference between marble and a printed lookalike.

It is also porous. Red wine, citrus, coffee and perfume oils will mark it if they sit. A darker stone forgives a dry water ring better than white does, but it forgives nothing about etching: acid dulls the polish permanently, and a dull patch cannot be cleaned out, only re-polished. Blot spills as they happen and use a coaster for anything acidic.

Will my tray look exactly like the photograph?

No. Each Dominic is cut from natural brown marble, so the veining, the depth of the brown and the exact weight differ from piece to piece.

Does brown marble stain as easily as white?

It is the same stone, so yes — marble is porous and red wine, citrus, coffee and perfume oils will mark it if left to sit. A darker surface disguises a dry water ring better than white does, but it does not disguise etching. Blot spills as they happen.

Can I put a drink straight onto it?
