Start with the room, not the sofa
Almost every sofa regret begins the same way: the piece was chosen before the space was measured. Before you look at a single lounge, do three things.
Measure the wall it will sit against — and then subtract. A sofa should leave breathing room: at least 45cm of clear floor on the walkway side, and 40–45cm between the sofa front and your coffee table. A three-seater that fills a wall edge-to-edge looks cramped no matter how beautiful it is.
Measure the way in. Front door width, hallway turns, internal doorways, stair landings, lift dimensions if you are in an apartment. Our delivery drivers can tell you exactly which sofas did not fit through a door last month. A three-seater with fixed arms needs a doorway of roughly 80cm and a clear turning path; a modular or a suite with removable legs is far more forgiving. If your access is tight, tell us — we will steer you towards pieces that arrive in sections.
Decide what the sofa is for. A formal lounge that hosts guests twice a month has different priorities to a family room where three children and a dog live on it. Be honest about this. It changes the fabric, the depth, and the construction you should choose.
Choose the configuration before the colour
Configuration is the decision that determines how a room actually works. Colour is the decision that gets all the attention. Do them in that order.

Fabric: what velvet, boucle, leather and linen-look are actually like to live with
This is where most online buying guides get vague. Here is what our floor staff tell customers.
Velvet is our signature fabric and our best seller by a distance, and the reason is simple: modern upholstery velvet is a performance fabric. The velvets on our lounges are dense, smooth-pile velvets that resist snagging, hold their colour, and stand up to daily family use far better than the delicate cotton velvets of a generation ago. Boucle is the fabric of the moment — that nubbly, looped texture that reads soft and sculptural. It is wonderfully tactile and forgiving of crumbs. It is less forgiving of pets with claws, and pale boucle in a busy family room is a commitment. In a formal lounge or an adult household, it is superb.

What is inside the sofa matters more than what is on it
Two sofas can look identical in a photograph and be completely different pieces of furniture. The difference is construction, and it is invisible until you sit down.
The frame. Look for a solid hardwood or engineered-timber frame. A frame that flexes when you push down on the arm will creak within two years.
The seat. Sit on it for longer than thirty seconds. A high-density foam seat will hold its shape; a cheap foam seat will feel wonderful in the showroom and develop a permanent dip in eighteen months. Some suites add sprung seating beneath the foam — ask which; it is the kind of support you notice on a Sunday afternoon.
Seat depth and height. This is personal. Taller people prefer a deeper seat (55cm and up); if you like to sit upright with your feet flat on the floor, a shallower seat around 50cm is more comfortable. There is no correct answer — only the one your body tells you, which is why we say what we say at the end of this guide.
Tufting and detailing. Deep-button tufting — the Chesterfield look — is more than decorative: it holds the upholstery taut and prevents sagging over time. Colour: the rule that saves you from regret
Choose your sofa colour for the room you have, not the room you saw on Instagram. A sofa is the largest block of colour in most living rooms, and it will still be there when the cushions, the rug and the wall art have all changed twice.
For longevity, the safest choices are the mid-tones: beige, taupe, charcoal, and the soft greys. They take every accent colour you throw at them. Black velvet is more dramatic than people expect and needs a light-filled room. Deep green, navy and blush are the confident choices — beautiful when the rest of the room is calm, and they are colours we can show you on the actual sofa, in the actual fabric, in store.
One practical note: if you are ordering online, look at the colour on more than one photo. Velvet in particular shifts with the light. The product pages show each piece in several settings for exactly this reason.
The questions to ask before you pay
Ask about the warranty.
