Most upholstered velvet beds start at queen. The Marco is built for the other bedrooms in the house: a child's first proper bed, a teenager's room, the guest room, the apartment where a double is the right size. It is upholstered in a soft light grey velvet — a quiet, cool neutral that sits with white, blush, sage or navy bedding without argument — and its 125cm padded headboard gives a smaller room the same presence and finished look as the main bedroom.

Light grey is the practical choice as well as the pretty one: it shows less than cream, reads calmer than dark grey, and photographs well in rooms that do not get much light. Dress it with a layered throw and two cushions and a single bed stops looking like a single bed.

Which size?

Single — takes a standard Australian single mattress, 92cm × 188cm. This is a true single, not a king single: the right size for a child's room, a compact guest room or a bunk-sized space where a king single would crowd the floor.

Double — takes a standard Australian double mattress, 138cm × 188cm. The size for a guest room, a teenager, or a one-bedroom apartment where a queen would leave no room to walk around.

Allow at least 60cm of clear floor on the open side of the bed, and more on the side you walk past most. The 125cm bed head sits comfortably below a standard 2.4m ceiling and clears most window sills, so it suits bedrooms where a taller winged headboard would not.
