A bookshelf that is furniture first and storage second.

This is a small edit of designer shelving: an open metal bookcase in gold or black that works as a room divider or a display bookshelf against a wall, and a 3-tier designer shelf with marble shelves on a gold or black metal frame for the living room or home office. Neither is a flat-pack utility bookshelf — these are pieces for styled objects, a few books, a plant and a framed print, in the same finishes as our console tables and coffee tables.

Gold shelving warms a neutral room and picks up brass tapware and lamp bases; black shelving keeps a modern space graphic and suits dark window frames.

Styling an open bookcase

Fill open shelving to about two-thirds. Stack books both vertically and horizontally, use the horizontal stacks as plinths for a small object, and leave one shelf per column mostly empty. Keep heavier objects on the lower shelves and check the wall fixing on any tall shelving unit in a home with children. A low bookcase under a window or behind a sofa doubles as a display surface.
