The Two Rules of Large Art

The two-thirds rule: Art above furniture should span roughly two-thirds the width of the piece below it. Above a 220cm lounge, that's an artwork (or composition) around 140–150cm wide.

The height rule: 15–20cm between the furniture top and the bottom of the frame. Higher, and the art floats away from the furniture; lower, and heads touch it.

One Large Piece or Many Small?

One large canvas creates calm and confidence — the room feels decided. A gallery of small pieces creates energy and story. Formal living rooms and bedrooms usually want the former; hallways and casual spaces enjoy the latter. Roughly two-thirds of the lounge's width — for a standard 210–230cm three-seater, an artwork around 140–155cm wide, hung 15–20cm above the backrest.

How high should large art hang above a bed?
15–20cm above the bedhead, centred on the bed — not the wall. If there's no bedhead, centre the canvas at 155–160cm eye level.

One large canvas or a gallery wall?
One large piece for calm, formal rooms; a gallery of smaller pieces for energy and personality. The mistake to avoid is a single undersized piece adrift on a big wall.
