Sizing an Entertainment Unit to Your TV

Width: The unit should be wider than the TV — ideally by 15–25cm on each side. A 65" TV (145cm wide) sits best on a unit of 180cm or more; a 75" TV (167cm) wants 200cm+. A TV overhanging its unit is the fastest way to make an expensive screen look precarious.

Height: Seated eye level should land at the middle of the screen. With standard lounge seating, that means a unit height of 40–55cm for most screen sizes — lower is almost always better than higher.

Depth: Allow for the TV's stand feet plus a few centimetres of breathing room — typically 40cm+ of usable depth. Wall-mounting the TV above the unit frees the surface entirely for styling.

The Details That Matter Before Your Buy

Cable management: Look for cut-outs or open rear panels that let cables drop invisibly behind the unit.

Ventilation: Consoles and amplifiers generate heat — open shelving or vented compartments keep electronics happy behind closed doors.

Styling the surface: If the TV is wall-mounted, treat the unit top like a console — a lamp or vase at one end, low objects at the other, and asymmetry to soften the screen's hard rectangle above.
