Austin 3D Print Vase 34cm

At 25cm across and 34cm high, Austin is the widest of the three ridged vases — enough mass to hold a console on its own.

The body is white ceramic, built up in fine horizontal ridges left by the 3D printing process. The ridges are the whole point of the piece: in flat daylight they read as quiet texture, and under a downlight or beside a lamp they break into narrow bands of light and shadow that shift as you walk past. Nothing is painted or applied — the pattern is the structure.

The proportions sit close to a cylinder, 25cm wide against 34cm tall, so it carries weight without height. It works empty. Stems are an addition to a shape that already stands up by itself, not a rescue.

Where a 25cm-wide vase belongs

On a 120–150cm console or hall table, Austin holds the surface alone. Set it about a third of the way in from one end rather than dead centre — that leaves room for a tray, a bowl or a lamp base without the two objects competing. Leave roughly 10cm of clear surface on each side; the ridges need air around them to read.

On a dining table, 34cm is tall enough to interrupt sightlines, so use Austin as a single centrepiece on tables 180cm and longer, or move it to the sideboard when you are seating guests. On open shelving it wants a bay at least 35cm wide and one object per bay.

Austin, Lincon and Dawson are the same 34cm height in three widths — 25, 20 and 17cm. Austin is the anchor of that trio: it is the one that can carry a surface by itself, where the narrower two need company. Group all three and you get a single horizon line at 34cm with three different weights beneath it, which is a rhythm one vase cannot produce. Stand them 12–15cm apart with Austin at one end rather than the middle.

Living with a printed ridged surface

Ridges hold dust in a way a smooth vase does not. A dry soft brush — a clean paintbrush or a makeup brush works — pulls it out of the grooves in seconds, which is easier than chasing it with a cloth. Wipe with a barely damp cloth only if needed, and dry it straight away.

As a general rule with any ceramic vessel, check for seepage with a small amount of water on a protected surface before using it with fresh stems, and stand it on a coaster or felt pad on timber and stone.
