Brodi Round Vase

Brodi is 23cm across and 25cm high — almost as wide as it is tall, and that near-square proportion is the whole design.

The body is white ceramic, rounded rather than columnar. Because it is round in plan and close to round in profile, there is no front and no back: it presents the same silhouette from every seat in the room. That sounds like a small thing until you put it in the middle of a coffee table or on a kitchen island, where anything with a face has to be aimed at someone.

The wide base and low height also make it steady. Most decorative vases carry their volume high and their weight on a narrow foot; Brodi keeps its mass low and spread, so it survives a room with children, dogs or people reaching across it.

Where a wide, low vase works

On a round coffee table of 90cm, the 23cm body takes about a quarter of the width — enough presence to be the single object on the table without a tray or a stack of books propping it up. On a 120cm rectangular coffee table it pairs well set to one third with a low bowl or a candle at the other.

At 25cm it clears the sightline problem: seated guests look over it, so it can hold the centre of a dining table through a meal. On a 180cm table, one Brodi centred is enough; go to two spaced at the thirds only if the table is 240cm or longer.

It also earns its place on a kitchen island, where the round form and low centre of gravity survive daily use better than a tall narrow vase, and on a hall console, where a rounded volume interrupts the long straight line of the furniture rather than repeating it.

Arranging into a round body

A wide vessel wants a wide arrangement. Long single stems look stranded in a body this shape — the volume below asks for a comparable mass above. As a working rule, cut so the arrangement finishes about one to one and a half times the height of the vase above the rim, which is roughly 25 to 38cm here, and let it spread to at least the 23cm width of the body. Full, short, seasonal bunches suit it. So do dried stems, which hold that spread without wilting into the rim.

As general guidance for any ceramic vessel, test with a small amount of water on a protected surface before using it with fresh stems, and stand it on felt pads or a coaster on timber and stone. Dust with a dry soft cloth; wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
