The lid is what separates a ginger jar from a vase — Zahra is a closed form, and it is finished as an object rather than a container waiting for flowers.

It follows the traditional ginger jar profile: a rounded shoulder that narrows to a short neck, closed with a domed lid that lifts off. It arrives as a lidded jar, and the lid is meant to stay on. Empty and closed, it still reads as complete, which is why ginger jars hold a mantel or a console the way an open vase cannot.

The ground is white ceramic with gold detailing worked against it. That white-and-gold pairing is the reason the form keeps turning up in Hamptons and classic interiors — it sits comfortably against painted joinery, marble, and blue-and-white ceramics without competing with any of them.

Placing a jar with a 16.9cm footprint

Both sizes share the same 16.9cm diameter and differ only in height — 30.2cm for the Small, 35.7cm for the Large. That shared footprint is genuinely useful: set side by side they line up on the base and step only at the top, so a pair looks composed rather than mismatched.

On a 120–150cm console or sideboard, use two jars to flank a mirror or artwork, one at each end, set about 15cm in from the edges. On a mantel of 120cm and up, one Large at one end balances a picture or a clock at the other. On open shelving each jar needs a bay at least 25cm wide, and the Large needs about 45cm of vertical clearance so the lid is not crowded by the shelf above.

In an entry, a single Large on a hall table at 35.7cm is the right height to be seen over a bowl or a tray without blocking a mirror behind it.

Small or Large, or both

Two of the same size give you a symmetrical pair — the traditional treatment, and the one that works when the jars flank something else. One of each gives you a graduated pair, 5.5cm apart in height, which reads better when the jars are the focus themselves and there is nothing between them.

On the lid: it is a separate piece that lifts free, so lift and carry the jar by the body, not the lid or the neck. Clean the ceramic with a soft dry cloth, and where there is gold detailing, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately — abrasive cleaners and scouring pads will wear decorative surface detailing over time.
