Mayfair Framed Canvas Wall Art - Large

Mayfair is a gesture, not a picture.

Broad black strokes sweep across a marbled ground of cream and soft grey — laid down fast, in the direction the brush was travelling, edges left ragged rather than tidied. Gold breaks through beneath them in warm, irregular passages, so the black never settles into a flat block.

Three colours, no subject, and enough movement to hold a wall on its own. It is the loudest quiet piece in the range.

A high-contrast piece needs distance

At 83 × 123 centimetres Mayfair is tall rather than wide, which puts it on the narrow wall — beside a doorway, between two windows, at the turn of a staircase, above a slim console.

But contrast changes the arithmetic. A piece this graphic wants at least 2 metres of viewing distance, where the strokes resolve into movement instead of reading as a mass of black. In a tight hallway it can feel heavy. On the wall you see from across a room, it does the most work of anything in this collection.

Above furniture, leave 20–25cm between the base of the frame and the surface below. On an open wall, centre it 145–150cm from the floor to its midpoint.

The black frame is not incidental

A slim black frame picks up the darkest strokes and closes the composition — something a light timber frame would not do. Against a white or pale grey wall the whole thing reads as a single graphic object rather than a canvas with a border around it.

It also means Mayfair sits comfortably with black steel, dark timber and smoked glass, where a warmer artwork would fight them.
