An olive tree for the corner of the room a real olive would never survive.

Green foliage on slim branching stems, held in the open, upright habit of an olive rather than packed into a dense ball. The gaps between the branches are the point — light passes through the canopy and the tree throws a broken shadow across the wall behind it instead of sitting there as a solid block of green.

Because it is artificial there is no watering schedule, no light requirement and no leaf drop, which makes it usable in the positions a living tree cannot hold: a windowless hallway, the dark corner behind a sofa, a bedroom that nobody is going to remember to water.

Choosing between 120cm and 200cm

The 200cm is a floor-standing, room-corner piece and needs to be treated as furniture. Under a standard 2.4m ceiling it leaves roughly 40cm of clear air above the highest leaves, which works but reads as filling the corner; under 2.55m to 2.7m ceilings it sits far more comfortably. Do not put it under a bulkhead, a sloping attic ceiling or the underside of a staircase where clearance drops below about 2.2m — the top of the tree will fold over and lose its line. Allow a clear square of floor around 60–70cm, stand it 15–20cm off the wall so the back branches are not crushed flat, and keep it out of door swings and walkways; two metres of tree at eye level is easy to walk into.

The 120cm is a different job entirely. On a bare floor in a large open-plan room it reads as undersized. It works when you lift it or anchor it: on a plant stand or stool of 40–50cm it reaches a total 160–170cm and holds a corner properly; beside a console table of the usual 75–80cm it stands about 45cm proud of the top, which is the right proportion next to a lamp and a tray; and it sits well straight on the floor in a smaller room — a bedroom corner, beside a bedhead, or next to a reading chair, where an armchair back of around 85cm gives it something to rise above.

How the 200cm is supplied

The 200cm comes in a plain white plastic pot. It is functional rather than decorative — a white cylinder that holds the tree upright and disappears against a pale wall. If you want the base to be part of the styling, the simplest route is to drop the whole thing into a decorative outer: a woven basket, a fluted concrete planter or a jute pot. Measure the internal width and depth of the outer planter first so the plastic pot drops in and sits level rather than perching on the rim.
