Scandinavian Framed Canvas Wall Art - Large

Two shapes, and the space between them.

A heavy black form curves down the left of the canvas and hooks back on itself. A warmer brown one answers it on the right. Both are laid flat — no brushwork, no texture, no gradient — against a cream ground that does as much of the work as the shapes do.

You read the whole composition in about a second. That is the point of it. Four tones in total: black, warm brown, taupe and cream, all of them colours you already have in timber, stone and unbleached linen.

Flat colour is less forgiving than brushwork

A gestural painting can hang almost anywhere and read as texture. Hard-edged shapes cannot. At 83 × 123 centimetres, Scandinavian wants a plain wall and clear space around it — allow roughly 30cm either side and it reads as composed. Crowd it between a bookcase and a doorframe and the forms start competing with everything nearby.

Above furniture, leave 20–25cm between the base of the frame and the surface below. On an open wall, centre it 145–150cm from the floor to its midpoint.

It is also the most forgiving of these pieces to hang in a pair or a trio. Flat forms sit alongside each other without the compositions arguing, in a way that two gestural canvases rarely manage.

Light timber, deliberately

The frame is pale wood rather than black — and that choice changes the piece. A black frame would have doubled down on the black form and pushed the whole thing towards graphic. The light timber holds it in Scandinavian territory instead: oak floors, wool, off-white walls, a little rattan.
