Buffets, Sideboards & Chests of Drawers — Storage That Deserves the Spotlight

Great storage furniture does something quietly clever: it removes clutter from a room while adding presence to it. A buffet turns the dining room wall into a serving station and a styling surface; a sideboard anchors a hallway or living room; a chest of drawers brings order to the bedroom without surrendering an inch of style. Elegant Collections' range spans mirrored glamour, Hamptons whites and contemporary silhouettes — pieces built to hold a household's life and look composed doing it.

Pair with: a mirror above | table lamps | ginger jars & vases | candle holders | trays.

Buffet, Sideboard or Chest of Drawers — What's the Difference?

Buffet: Traditionally the dining room piece — counter-height, long, with cupboards and drawers for dinnerware, linen and serving pieces. Its top doubles as a serving surface when entertaining.

Sideboard: Nearly interchangeable with a buffet, but equally at home in the living room, hallway or entry, where it works as a storage-and-display anchor.

Chest of drawers: The bedroom's workhorse — all drawers, made for folded clothing. Taller "tallboy" versions maximise storage on a small footprint.

Getting the Placement Right

Against the wall: Leave the buffet or sideboard 60cm+ of clearance in front so drawers and doors open fully with someone standing at them.

Under a mirror or art: A landscape rectangle mirror or wide canvas above, sized at roughly two-thirds the buffet's width, completes the composition.

Styling the top: Lamp at one end, tall vase or sculptural object grouping at the other, and breathing space between. The surface should look curated, not crowded — you'll want room to set down a serving platter.

Frequently Asked Questions — Buffets, Sideboards & Drawers

What is the difference between a buffet and a sideboard?
Very little in practice — both are long, counter-height storage pieces. "Buffet" leans dining room; "sideboard" is the broader term used anywhere in the home. Either can do the other's job.

What size buffet suits my dining room?
Allow at least 60cm of clearance between the buffet and the dining table (90cm+ is comfortable for pulling out chairs with someone at the buffet). Length-wise, buffets of 150–180cm suit most Australian dining rooms.

Can I put a TV on a buffet or sideboard?
Yes — a sideboard makes a handsome, higher-storage alternative to a standard TV unit, provided the depth accommodates your TV's feet. See also our entertainment units purpose-built for the job.

Do these pieces require assembly?
It varies — many arrive assembled or near-assembled, while some designs require assembly. Check the product page for specifics before ordering.

How long does delivery take?
Metropolitan Melbourne and Sydney — typically within 7 business days, with delivery cost calculated at checkout. Regional and interstate delivery is also available: standard shipping is calculated at checkout, and bulky items can be quoted via accounts@elegantcollections.com.au before ordering.
